Subject: Jetta Digifant I problem
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

Hi all, I know this is not a Vanagon question but I know some of you are gluttons for punishment and own Jettas too. I have a neighbor who has a nice low mileage (70k) 92'Jetta, 1.8 w/ Digifant I. The car has occasionally shut down (over the last 8 months) while running down the road. When taken into the shop they have not been able to find any problem as the car would start and run just fine. This last week it finally stopped running at all and I thought I should be able to spot what the problem is for him. It turns over just fine but appears to have no spark (I put my timing light on and am not getting any signal). I've checked the coil, coil lead, spark plug cables, distr. cap, ign. Switch, and all check out O.K. I checked the voltage to the hall sensor and it was 10 volts and then put everything back together and it started right up. He came over today and said it wouldn't start for him. I rechecked the voltage going to the Hall sensor at the Distr. and got a reading of .74 volts. The book says I should have 10 volts. The wiring diagram shows that this circuit goes right back to the CPU (I check the continuity of the harness from the Distr. up to the CPU and it was fine). I think I'm on track of what the problem is but am unsure what to do next. I don't have a different CPU to swap out. The battery is fairly new, charged and turns the engine readily. I opened the CPU box up and didn't see any obvious cold joints or burnt components. I didn't see any corrosion in the connections, sprayed WD-40 to clean any out. No change. Any Ideas?

Thanks, Kevin Dawson
