A good pair of 4" seperates will sound way better than almost any 6x9's. Especially if you are going to use a sub to make up for the lack of low end. Remember that each speaker only has to be good at reproducing a portion of the musical range. I have a pair of kicker 4" mid ranges in the front doors with Kicker R13 tweeters mounted up next to the sunvisors. I ran the wires up in the windshield seal. The R19 or R25 would probably be a little smoother tweeter but they cost a LOT more. I used Eclipse Point source 4" speakers in the back. They have incredible bass for a small speaker and very cutting high end. I do not think they would sound very good in the front but as fill in speakers in the back they are great. For bass it is hard to beat a Bazooka amplified tube for good low end without taking up much space. Free air woofers are another good way, but nothing really beats a sealed box for tight accurate bass. This will give a system that will really "accurately" reproduce music. It will not be a big boomy rap blaster. My wife who is not really into music got in the van and said "Wow!" Find a good knowledgeable stereo shop that will let you listen to a lot of stuff and help with your particular application. Good luck and remember that round speakers as a general rule of thumb sound much better than any of that oval stuff. hope this helps, Craig the Gorge VW club
