I do not have any part numbers for you, but there is a tool made just for this purpose. They are called spring clamp pliers and they are not too expensive (US$10-15). One type has swivel jaws which is the best to have for Vanagons. A well-stocked industrial supply house or auto parts store should have them. They change a miserable task into an afterthought.

If you have even a modest shop and you are somewhat handy with tools, you should be able to modify a pair of slip-joint pliers for this purpose. I once had to make a pair and they must have worked OK because I never got them back when I lent them out.
