folks, i'm not sure where the 80 ft-lbs came from, but since i had my 80 vanagon, years ago, and even now with my 87 and 88 buses, the recommended torque for lug nuts/studs was/is 123 ft-lbs (17 mkg). and yes, i carry a torque wrench around with me. :) it's only about $50 at Sears (get the 1/2-inch size. you'll also need a 19mm socket to fit the wrench and a 6-inch extension to go between them). :)
