Before cleaning my AFM, my 84 ran REAL rich, would idel for a maybe 30 seconds then spit, sputter , catch it's self then idel for another 30 seconds. It also drank gas like it was going out of style. I removed the top and measured it at the ECM plug and at rest got 500 ohms and as I moved it upward the readings went wild about 900 ohms then setled back in at 1100 and upward. When it went wild was where my mprblem was. I cleaned it real good with electronic cleaner and a cotton rag. there's a cold start air regulator under the air cleaner that maybe your problem.
