I think the newer - the better. 1985 gets an easier to close sliding door latch and nicer upholstery. Nicer interior and exterior colors also. I think VW improved and refined the details as the years went on. For example: current South African vanagons use rotary dial heater controls which are easy to use, without having to read the owners manual.
