Subject: alt & O2 lamps and dying batt.
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

hello, thanks for any advice you can offer.

The other day the alt and o2 lights came on, because the westy battery indicator stayed green, I thought perhaps it was just a short in the indicator light circuit. After some nighttime driving, the batt finally died along with the engine. Not having any diagnostic tools with me, I figured I'd just replace the alternator and be done with it.

After replacing the alt, started it up and no red lights. However half way to the end of the block, the lights clicked back on, then off then on again.. sometimes this seemed relative to engine rpm, sometimes not. I returned to the my home and restarted the engine and watched the alt and o2 light turn on and off several times. Each time they went off I hear a "click" noise from behind the dash/inst panel.

Any ideas? Doesn't the vanagon alt have a built in regulator? I suppose I COULD have gotten a bad alt from Kragen, but this seems unlikely... (it's a rebuilt by autolite)

I've searched the list and found one obscure refrence to terminal 11. Thanks again for any help.
