Subject: Smell of gas
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Yesterday, I dropped off my '84 GL at my mechanic's for its 500+ mile oil change. (The engine is still being broken in.) I smelled gas coming out of the rear when I stopped the van. I mentioned it to Bob and he said think nothing of it. Last night, when I picked up the van, Bob was showing me the 'notches' on the oil dipstick and and we noticed his man shorted me a quart of oil. As he was pouring in the oil, he too smelled gas and immediately brought the van back into the garage. Once he crawled underneath, he found the fuel return had a plastic connector on it and it was leaking- enough to wet everything down- even though it was just a drip! In any case, he tightened down the clamp another 1/3 of a turn and it stopped the leak and everything is fine now.

I couldn't smell the gas unless I was at the back of the van so I could have been running down the road with the gas leak and the drops could have hit the hot engine... Vanojet!
