Hi Steve,

Thought I'd just throw my 2 cents in on this one, since it sounds almost exactly like the same thing (same symptoms) happened to me while I was 700 miles away from home. 2 local VW shops/mechanics that were supposed to know what they were doing and finally the VW Dealer. I spent over 4 hours behind the dealership doors with the mechanic AND my trusty Bentley. It turned out to be a broken Temp II wire. You couldn't see it, but I finally found it when I wiggled it close to the connection and it sputtered and died AFTER the mechanic said it was fixed. He had already taken apart the AFM, put in he new cable (Vanagon syndrome) and a couple of other things. All it took was a few snips put in 2 new wires close to the plug and presto zingo it ran fine. I had him take all the other stuff back off and I it still cost me the 4+ hours of shop labor. Heaven knows what it would have cost if I wasn't the mechanics shadow! That was 4 months ago and it still running fine. Good luck!!
