Yep... and the minimum I would suggest for those who are serious about not
having their Vanagon totaled in a fire. Doesn't hurt to post it again, but I
think this was already covered earlier in the thread.

Automatic Fire Extinguishers start at about $200 and use a 'reformulated'
halon agent.... not recommending these or even saying they will actually
work/fit into the vanagon engine compartment (have concernse about the
temperature at which they discharge and where they would fit in the engine
compartment), but it does give an idea of what could be done for say $200 to
$300.... But I would think that anything like this should be in addition to
your suggestions above; not instead of them...
