The main issue is that Vanagons are getting to the age that the fuel lines go bad. Vanagons have higher fuel pressure than most American vehicles... a small pin hole can spew fuel over then engine and hot exhaust pipes... to make things worse most reports have indicated that the driver of the Vanagon doesn't notice the fire as they drive down the road... what they notice is the engine running ruff... finally they just happen to look in the mirror and notice smoke and or flames coming out of the rear vents... often too late... there have been many Vanagons totaled due to this problem...
