I have a friend who has done a number 1.9 TD & 1.9 TDI conversions on Syncro Vanagons. From his experience, the 1.9 TD is perfectly matched to the drivetrain. However, he has broken 3 Syncro transmissions due to the excessive torque from the 1.9 TDI coupled w/ his aggressive driving style. He works in Europe but is currently very accessible in the US right now. If anyone has any TDI conversion questions, now is the time to ask. If you are in the San Francisco area, I can even arrange an introduction in person.
