Keith & others:

I've used both the real chains and the cable chains, and for occasional use, the cables are the way to go. I've found the real chains are great for hard ice or deep soft snow or mud, they have more bite and grab than the cables (and they throw mud WAAAY out the back when sliding around in 2nd or 3rd gear: wheeee!), but when using them on the road, they sure beat the back of the bus: very rough ride (thick chain links on the tires) and if they break, they will rip your rear quarters up quickly. The cables are easy to put on and adjust, no jaw-numbing ride, perfectly adequate for the occasional uses I've needed. Your local FLAPS or tire store should have something adequate (costco too).

fwiw, $.00002, imho, ymmv, etc, yada yada, ...... (I'm sure there's more)
