Subject: Re: jackstands vs. ramps
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

I have a garage with a smooth concrete floor and find that I cannot use ramps without placing a stick between the ramp and the wall so that the ramps do not slide forward when I try and drive up them. The ramps just slide across the floor. I have the standard red metal ramps. I don't bother using ramps with my 2WD vanagon because its becomes to much work.

I do not have that problem with the syncro though. In fact you can place the ramps in front or behind the wheels and drive up them in either direction. Also, you can place the ramps on one side (as in drivers or passenger side, not only front or back) and elevate one side. This is useful for removing the driveshaft etc. And the ramps stay in place, they don't slide across the floor. I guess all four wheels are pulling or pushing. This suggests that there is always a little bit of torque going to the front axle at all times. While I'm on the topic, the approach to my garage is steep and I drive in at an angle. One wheel of the van falls lower than the others, and there is less weight on it. The syncro feels much different than the 2WD vanagon when I drive into the garage. I'm not spinning the tires or anything when I'm going in, its just that you can feel that 1 - 3% (or whatever it is) amount of torque most all the time.
