I phoned an autoelectrician, who told me xenon H4-replacements bulbs are an
off-the-shelf Hella item, cost $6US.

I haven't yet looked at one, and don't know if they are just ordinary bulbs
with xenon replacing the iodide gas; certainly the cars offered with xenon
gas-discharge lights (such as the Toyota Altezza=Lexus IS 200/300) would
seem to have no filament.

The Japanese allow yellow headlights, and many used import cars here in NZ
still have them.
