 IMHO a/c units were shipped over to the states loose as kits with their
 Vanagons.  The a/c units are installed somewhere in the states (either at the
 port of entry or at a dealer).  We also know that sunroof Vanagons (although
 a relative few) were imported.  I think that VW believed that a/c and
 sunroofs contradicted each other, as well as made an installation conundrum.
 These combinations that now exist probably do so because of some aftermarket
 installation.  Maybe, as in your case, an industrious individual found an a/c
 unit in a junk yard Vanagon and fitted it to his sunroof Vanagon.  I believe
 that the a/c unit in my sunroof loaf van was an aftermarket installation.

Actually, the original owner of my '84 vanagon Wolfsburg edition Sunroof van
(weekender interior, camper side windows w/ screens, rear hatch screen and
curtain set all stock) bought the van new from a vw dealer in VA with the
front overhead a/c system installed already.  apparently the vw dealer wanted
to outfit this van with every conceivable option offered in '84 for a
passenger van, so they installed the a/c unit when they took delivery of the
van from P.O.E.   The overhead unit is the same a/c unit as for a '85 down
hardtop van, but slightly modified as the sunroof vans have a different arc
to the headliner because of the double roof.  the unit also overlaps the
front of the sunroof opening by a few inches, but doesnt affect in its
operation.
so far nobody else has come forward saying that have or have seen another
sunroof van w/ a/c, so apparently this is a one-off..
