Make SURE that it's the correct thermostat. If your "local parts place" is a NAPA affiliate, it's the wrong one. NAPA's catalog is incorrect and they do not carry one that will fit. The disk that extends out on the motor side needs to be 1.22" in dia. NAPA's is 1.625 in dia. Physically will not fit. Gasket (on a 1.9) is an o-ring. I assume that the 2.1 is similar.

Good luck. Your diagnosis sounds correct. Yes, you will need to bleed the system following the change. If you haven't yet changed the coolant this year, now's your chance. I use Texaco's Dex-cool. It is phosphate and silicate free as is the Autobahn coolant. Available in the automotive section of most department stores. Takes a couple of gallons typically. I also use distilled water. Just to be on the 'safe' side.
