Subject: Leaky Gas tank - Part 3
Comments: cc: Type2@lenti.type2.com
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Volks,

So, I've had the gas tank on the 81 Westy out three times now. I can get it in and out in under two hours and I think I understand how everything works. I even know where the leak is......I just don't know how to make it stop. I really thought I had it fixed the last time.

It's leaking around the filler neck grommet. It's a new grommet. The tank and filler neck seem to be in good shape. However, the fit of the grommet seems to be pretty loose. I can see daylight between the grommet and the filler neck when I test fit it before installing it into the tank.

What should I do now? Do I have a bad grommet? Should the grommet fit the neck tightly? Can I make a shim out of an old bicycle tube to make the fit tighter? Is there a silicone sealer that I might use?

Should I just sale the damn thing and buy a winniebeago.......only kidding, I still love the old gal.

As always, thanks for your help.

Ron Hill 81 Westy Macon GA

PS: I guess one other option is to never put more than $10 dollars worth of gas in the thing.
