I have a turbo diesel campmobile.
Because the oil apparently is not being burned out the exhaust, and there
are no apparent leaks, why is the engine using so much oil? Even my mechanic
is confused. I would like some theories before I tear this sucker down.

I am confused as to why you don't think it is being burned. This sounds like
canabalizing the engine oil because of faulty (worn)  lower rings. I saw
this after awhile in my folks Turbo Diesel Jeta a couple of years ago.
