Brian, I had a similar problem on my 88 GL. Even after the tranny was rebuilt itt shifted hard. I switched to Redline MT90 synthetic for my gear oil and now it shifts sweet, sweet, sweet. I can't account for my problem or yours, but I suggest switching to Redline MT90. You will be amazed at the difference, most likely.
