That's the "silver socket". It's a 12V electrical outlet, like a
cigarette lighter, but in a different size. Bradley Prunehead on the
old list brought back a bunch of the plugs for these things from
Germany a few years ago, and I had the pleasure of using one of his
plugs on the Inuvik group trip in 1996. I don't know of a
Canadian/US source for the plugs to fit silver sockets, but maybe
someone else does... Ron? Ken? Karl? Rusty? Derek? Mr. Beierl?
Dr. Arnott, Esq?
A search of the archives for "silver socket", "Bradley Prunehead" or
"Bradley M" or possibly (quite likely, actually) something along the
lines of "burning magnesium engine cases and other cool stuff in
campfires" and "CCC" will get hits on this. The silver socket *must*
have been discussed in the not-so-distant past here, but old archives
back around 1995-96 will certainly work, although I don't know if
those are archived on here on gerry or at type2.com's archives.
I can't *believe* that a VW mechanic would not know about the silver socket!
