I purchased and installed a similar radio from a 97 Jetta into my 87 camper.
You need to get or make a removal tool to get the old radio out. I used two
pieces of #12 copper wire bent into a "U:" shape and inserted them in the
holes on each end of the faceplate. This releases the unit from the dash.
You can pull out the ash tray to push on the rear of the radio.
In order to get the radio to work in the Vanagon, you will need to add power
to an additional terminal in the wiring harness. I think it was terminal #6,
but my radio had a wiring diagram on it, and when I matched it up to the
existing Vanagon harness, that position on the plug had no wire in it. I
added a constant fused 12V to that terminal and the radio worked.
To get the code, take the radio to a dealer and they should be able to help
you provided the previous owner didn't change it.
Look at the door to your cassette deck, if it has a small bump on it, it is
set up to interface with a Clarion CDC-635 or RDC-634 CD changer. You will
need a cable to connect the changer to the radio. I bought an adapter from
Crutchfield and a 13 pin DIN cable but haven't gotten the CD changer working
yet. I have a 97 Jetta that uses the same (factory) radio and that Clarion
CD changer works fine with it.
Good luck,
Tim
