I'm in process now with my '90 Vanagon. Its an RV out of an '89 Jetta
with 147,000 miles. 220 to 225 compression on all four cyls. Trans. is
inplace with CVs torqued, diesel bellhousing, input shaft, and clutch
lever installed, new Redline MT-90, etc.. I have drilled two additional
rear engine carrier mounting bracket holes, making four for each side.
The carrier brackets are installed.
I'm thinking about what to do for the exhaust system, and leaning toward
something other than the RV manifold or the diesel manifold. What to
do in place of the three worn, ripped, expensive, bonded-rubber
mountings that damp exhaust vibration from the engine, (I might cut some
rectangles out of old polyester-belted tires, drill through them, and
bolt them in-place as a "sandwich" filling). Shall I install the
Vanagon setup including a cat., go with the diesel setup and forget the
cat., or do a custom exhaust and not worry about the bonded rubber
mountings.
Wondering whether to grind 5mm., (for insurance), off the diesel input
shaft to avoid "bottoming" in the end of the Jetta crank.
Getting ready for the power steering pump package to arrive from Gary
McEachern, so I can start trying to figure out what I'm about there.
I think I'm ready to go with the wiring harness...time will tell. Fuel
and Digifant2 relays...under backseat or in engine compartment (is
engine heat reason enough to have them under the backseat?).
What to do for the airbox. Do I try to install the warm air deflector
on the exh. manifold, (it interferes with the support), try to find
another source for warm air, or just forget about using it entirely?
Shall I leave the air duct in the right corner or take it out and put it
in the left corner?
Little things: alternator cooling duct procurement, alternator pulley,
second crank pulley, oil cooler...
Thats all I can think of at the moment.
I'm soon to put together a mailorder, but am waiting until I'm close to
being sure I know what all I need to order. I'm looking forward to the
day when I can make tire and shock decisions.
