Yes, it fits. They both share the same bell housing and clutch parts. The rear section of the linkage is different and must be changed. There is a fairly well known company selling a kit for this purpose as the air cooled trannys are cheaper and easier to find, as well as cheaper to rebuild. The company is Transform of Long Beach, Calif. Check the advertisers index in any issue of Hot VW. A friend of mine has been using an 81 air cooled tranny with the Transform kit for many years in his 89 Vanagon. Mark
