The heater system on the 82 is different than any other water cooled
Vanagon. The heater valve placement and hose routing is different along
with the flap controls. They do seem to make noises not often heard on
other years. Raising the front helps bleed the radiator but actually
makes it harder to get the air out of the heater as there is no bleed
valve and the heater core is then the high point. To get the air out of
the heater, drive around with the heat lever all of the way to the right
(max). Do this even with the engine cold as you are trying to push the
bubbles back to the rear and when the engine is cold this will be the
only path available for the water pump to pump the coolant( unless the
thermostat is bad). Drive down a steep hill with the engine at a high
rpm with the heater valve open all the way and leave it open until the
noises diminish. It may take a few days.
