Mark,

All VW models have the same spcification for what to do with that bolt. Mine cost me about $1.50 each from the dealer. I have reused them for years w/o any problems whatsoever. However, for $3 per wheel, I thought it would be cheap insurance and have replaced them as I serviced my brakes.

For clarification purposes, I believe you to mean the small bolts which bolt the caliper to the carrier and NOT the bigger bolts which bolt the carrier to the steering knuckle, right? I was concerned that you may be talking about that larger bolt because your original post mentioned heating something in the vicinity of the knuckle.
