Does that mean that most VW Vanagons in the USA were MADE in the USA?? Could that be the cause of the reliability problems that everyone is going on about??

All the VW Carravelles in Australia were fully imported from Germany. Could the quality have been better? I haven't really had any problems with Fritz in the 1 1/2 years of ownership - so I'm sticking by THAT Theory!!!

Anyway - back to transmissions...... I have a table that shows all the Gear Ratios, Final Drive Ratios and km/1000 rpm for the: * 4-Speed * 5-Speed * 4+1 speed - as used on the 4WD Syncro

If you're interested, contact me and I'll email it privately. It's accuracy cannot be fully guaranteed as there may be some slight differences between countries, etc, but where I have found differences, they are noted.

To the best of my knowledge, no 2wd Vanagons were ever imported by VW of America other than one year. I believe it was 82 or 83 and only for the diesel. The other exceptions were Syncros which, with the extra low 1st gear, gives you five forward speeds.
