The speakers are 4", and I have the Pioneer 2-ways installed in both my front doors and AC housing.

The speakers sound great when you are stationary, like when camping, and even the base is not that bad at comfortable listening levels. However, when driving, you need to turn up the volume more to overcome road noise, and that's when you realize that there is little or no bass at higher volumes. What bass there is comes through distorted. In the Westfalia, the stock speaker locations are somewhat limiting for reproducing bass, particularly the door speakers.

I think you will find this problem with whatever brand 4" speaker you buy. It's a combination of small size and the stock location in the Vanagon. If I had to do this again, I might consider mounting larger speakers in the doors.

The Pioneers are rated at 80 or 100W. I am using them with an Alpine 4X40W indash CD player with remote, and the sound is very good until turned up really loud. Either a dedicated subwoofer, an amplifier, or both, would probably help the bass. But midrange and treble are vert good, and I'm happy with the sound.
