Vanagons only overheat sitting in traffic if something is wrong... or maybe it's 130 degree's outside... being it's November I doubt that is the case in your situation...

beyond that you are asking us to play a guessing game... why don't you try providing us some clues...

like year of your vanagon... mileage.. last time you changed coolant... what was the percent of coolant Vs water? are they any other signs of overheating other than the blinking light (blinking lights sometimes happen without the engine being overheated) have you checked the level of the coolant? ... what is it? have you been loosing coolant? what items have been serviced recently... especially on the coolant system...
