whats an "automatic engine"?

you mean tranny? you stated you have a type2. i assume you have a '73-'79 bus westy. in that case, stick with your manual. the '73-'79 auto trannys were very problematic on the aircooled buses, quite the opposite from the '83-'91 vanagon's auto tranny.. chris '84 vanagon AT '78 westy 4spd
