The main differences between manual and automatic are: 1)gas mileage -- manual owners are reporting highway mileage around 23 mpg while my automatic (Westy) gets 19 mpg. 2) speed -- manuals are faster cause you can wind that bad boy out, automatics are more leisurely. Flip side of that is I haven't found a way to over rev with the automatic aside from manually down shifting.

Automatics don't have the 3-4 problem of the manuals but could have a whole nuther set of problems if not maintained properly (regular fluid changes).

I have had a manual 90 gl for two years, and have been thinking about purchasing a 91 Carat MV, which is an automatic. Are there some torque advantages/disadvantages to the automatic? Is there a significant weight diffenence between the manual and automatic transmissions?

Thanks for your observations.
