If I remember correctly from my younger days, when toying with a motorcycle a friend had told me a different muffler would improve performance. When I had asked why he explained that the back pressure from the muffler... would somehow help the engine in completing it's compression/exhaust cycle... dunno how true it is... but it does have a certain logic...

Why does an exhaust leak cause performance problems? Because the Oxygen Sensor is under reading the output?

Just from a layman's knowledge it would seem as if the faster the exhaust leaves the engine the better. Why would an exhaust leak before the muffler hurt performance?
