Seen that... in a pick and pull junk yard. Really ugly. If you do it, you need to make sure you get ALL the tin and make sure it can be fitted tightly with the rubber gaskets to the outside walls of the engine compartment. I have both an 83 AirCooled and an 84 Waterboxer... Waterboxer all the way. Quieter (relative), more power, and it seems like a better torque curve. I would think about twenty times before I did that. You also realize that the value of the van is... nada when you are finished that conversion. I suspect trying to get a heating system to work would be a major PITA.
