Here is what I found doing the conversion on a '85 that doesn't have the
three wire oxygen sensor setup. I wanted to find an alternative to cutting
the wiring out of the 2.1l harness (plus I didn't have one to cut). I went
to the local U-pull it and by looking around I found that '87 Volvos have the
same three wire oxygen sensor setup as the Vanagon! And there were a bunch
of these in the yard. I cut the plug off of the oxygen sensor (so I could
splice in a generic sensor and save money) and I also traced the wiring back
to the Volvo ECU which is right behind the glove box. I unplugged the ECU
and then went back to the engine compartment. Cut the harness at about the
middle of the car. This gives you all the length of harness you need for the
oxygen sensor and also for the line that goes to the Coil. I got two of
these harnesses for under $10.
When you go to splice in this harness in the conversion, you will notice
that the green wire to the oxygen sensor itself has a signal wire and another
lead coming from it (it is coaxial). This other lead is the shielding for
the signal wire and it is important to ground it to the body (you could
ground it in the ECU plug but I didn't want to mess anything up in there so I
just spliced on a piece of wire and grounded it to the body). Between the
signal wire and the wiring you have cut off of the oxygen sensor you will
have plenty of length to reach to where the Cat is and also hook up the wire
at the coil and ground (for heater element). I have told Peter about this
but he hasn't put it on the website yet. I hope this helps you.
Thanks,
Ken Wilford
