I don't think is it related to the WBX

Bugatti has a WR12 in one of their cars which is a 550+ hp beast which has a displacement of 5.6L This is really two 2.8L VR6 engines fused together. The W12 that Audi developed for VW is two V6 engines "fused" together - no doubt sharing the 5V technology too for a nice breathing machine. Imagine getting a valve job done on that puppy 12 x 5.... 60 valves! Puts the ole 16V GTI to shame!

I friend of mine's father is building an airplane with a 12 cylinder radial engine that came from Russia in the 1980s... not sure the spec on it at all other than it makes a tonne of power! I like really BIG engines!

Another friend of mine from the Netherlands immigrated to Canada and went out and bought a 1970 something 500+ cu-inch V8 to drive around town in... lots of power - lots of gas. According to Peter it cost the same amount to drive the boat in Canada as it did his Golf in the Netherlands and he is paying less tax.

David,

This W-12 may be from the same gene pool as the WBX, but I think the next element in the permutation of the flat four would be an X-8. Sort of like 2 WBX's half-lapped together. Henry Ford was doing his damnedest to develop one to power the Model A. Then there is the experimental 1935 Hoffman X-8 which may have had Ford'$ backing. Rear-engined (more precisely, mid-engined), H2O-cooled, X-8 and, if you squint when you look at its profile, Beetle-like.
