My 88 TD syncro(Norway)had some rumbling noise coming from the back when I was backing off the gas ,thanks for everyone who repied to give me some ideas.I havn`t fixed the problem yet but I did find that when I went to take off the brake drum and hub off the axel I first had a problem to remove the big nut:The problem wasn`t that It was too tight,I mean it was tight but with that 46mm socket on my 3\4 drive and 3&1\2 feet of 2" pipe I got it moving alright ,but the person who had their grubby mits on this thing before me had not greased the axel before putting it back together so the nut was pretty well rusted on solid.Half a can of WD-40 later I finished my battle with the nut and then to my surprise when I went to use the hub puller I found the hub came straight off with almost no effort.I dont know if this is normal or not? Then I found that the splines on the axel were worn away approx 1.5-2cm from outer bearing grease cover and also on the hub in the same place. So now I have to locate a new axel and hub .Is the axel the same for syncro`s and non Syncro`s or is there a difference between petrol and diesel.?Any ideas what may have caused this?
