Over at Deja.com, on the Rec.autos.makers.vw.aircooled newsgroup (which is a heck of a lot more rowdy than this group, and not always for the better) you might want to try a search on 'welding'. There have been some good discussions on the subject.

I have a small Miller Mig with the gas bottle. Welding/autobody restoration is very dusty and dirty, but when you have that spray gun in your hand ready to lay the paint...ohhhh what a thrill.

Disclaimer: Most Auto Paint for respray still contains lead (as does the old paint on VW's I assume), take precautions especially with children.
