My brother and I have been working on Volkswagens of all sorts for about 3-4 years. We bought a Lincoln SP-125 PLUS Mig welder with a lifetime lease 80# CO2/Argon gas cylinder. The welder is 110 volt powered at 20 AMP or can also be powered 110 volt 25 AMP with optional power cord. We use 10# spools mild steel wire most all the time, but it also has the ability to weld aluminum with smaller 2# spools and straight argon gas. The mig welder is absolutely fabulous to work with. With a little practice on some scrap metal you can effortlessly weld thin sheet metal with little to no warpage. You can also run a well penetrating weld bead on heavier gauge metal up to 5/16". We don't have the optional 25 Amp power cord, but you can weld thicker metal if you need to with it. We have installed a number of floor pans and battery trays in beetles, frame and cargo floor repairs on a 66 Deluxe Bus, repair and build custom engine cooling tin for air cooled engines, body rust repair and customization, not to mention building our own tooling for pulling wheel bearings and a ton of other expensive to buy engine and transmission tooling for both air cooled and water cooled Volkswagens. I could give you a list a mile long with other projects that we have completed using the welder. It is truly the best investment we made. High quality strong, smooth and clean weld beads. I strongly recommend to spend the extra money and get a good quality mig welder made by a well known company like Lincoln, Miller or Hobart. I personally went with Lincoln because of their reputation. We have a Lincoln 225 Amp AC/DC stick welder that we use for our heavy gauge welding. It has been passed down from our Grandfather to our Father and then to us. It runs and welds as good as the day it was new and has never given any of our three generations a problem. Granddad still brings projects of his to our shop and runs nice weld beads with his old welder at the still creative age of 76. I just thought I would share my experience with you.

I can't imagine driving anything but a Volkswagen!
