Hey-

I used to live in Missoula. The highways in Eastern Washington are flat, straight and boring. Idaho and Western Montana are a different story. Lots of mountains and curving roads. If the weather turns bad, it can be quite a stressful crossing (I once had to cross in driving snow by the light of my flashers because the headlights only lit up the snow---scary).

I've never driven Hwy. 12, but I know it's a much slower trip (but with bus, maybe it's a wash). It does get closed a lot during the winter, or, more accurately, it's closed in the winter with brief periods of it being open. Check the road reports carefully this time of year.

Have you been to Missoula before? If you like interesting beer, you need to try a place called the Rhino. 40 or so beers on tap, many of them local to Montana. It in downtown and easy to find, just ask, folks will actually help.
