He's talking about the long bolt that goes all the way through the thermostat housing. When I did my waterpump, the shaft of this bolt seized in the housing due to corrosion. I was able to use a propane torch and heat the t-stat housing to get the bolts out. The good news is that the t-stat housing bolts to the old *water pump*, not the block. So if this is indeed the bolt in question, then if he breaks it off the worst case scenario is having to find a hardware store to buy a replacement bolt. Take a close look at the pictures of a water pump repair job (especially step #7) on my website at: http://volksweb.relitech.com/19wpump.htm TomC tcarrington@relitech.com http://www.relitech.com/tomc http://volksweb.relitech.com 85 Vanagon Crew Cab 82 Westy diesel=>gas conversion 81 Checker A-11 (Taxi) 65 Notchback > -----Original Message----- > From: Tommy W Laney [SMTP:tubrodog@JUNO.COM] > Sent: Wednesday, December 13, 2000 9:52 PM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: help water pump 85 vanagon > > My son and two buds are broke down in Gallup, NM.....(85 Vanagon Westy) > Found a auto guy there that started replacing the water pump > (seal/bushing failed) > He calls today and says there is a 3" bolt that is rusted and he's afraid > if he turns it will break off in the block, and the water pump can't be > removed......
