Just had the same thing happen all through this trip. Yesterday morning, it got so bad that we decided to turn around and go back to the people whose house we had just left. Advance Auto Parts got me a rebuilt half shaft, completely assembled and greased for $90 plus $45 core (got that back when I turned in the old shaft). Popped it in...no more knocking.
