Paul, I think it's rich as in more fuel than usual. The incomplete combustion leaves unburned gas behind, and this gas cools the exhaust valves while exiting. A spark plug inspection could reveal if the engine is running rich, or you could look inside the tailpipe for excessive carbon deposits.
