Fuel/air mixture ratio is richness. Too much air & too little fuel gives a lean mixture, causing overheating, burned valves etc. Too little air and too much fuel and you get incomplete burning, fouled plugs/pistons/rings etc, smoke, excessive consumption...and that hidden danger, cylinder-wall-wash, which is unburned fuel getting past the rings and thinning the oil on the bores, causing very rapid wear (a real problems with diesels in particular).
