He's talking about the long bolt that goes all the way through the thermostat housing. When I did my waterpump, the shaft of this bolt seized in the housing due to corrosion. I was able to use a propane torch and heat the t-stat housing to get the bolts out.

The good news is that the t-stat housing bolts to the old *water pump*, not the block. So if this is indeed the bolt in question, then if he breaks it off the worst case scenario is having to find a hardware store to buy a replacement bolt.
