I recently rebuilt the left head on my '87 and decided to go ahead and do the water pump while I was at it (trying to be a bit PROactive for a change...). It's pretty straight forward. It's also a good idea to replace all those little hoses connected to it at the same time. (dealership and Napa). I've also been slowly going through and replacing all the hose clamps with screw down types, nice and tight.

Darrell has a great Napa hose guide on his site http://www.loam.org/vw/Vanagon/VWtoNapaHoses/

Expect to get coolant everywhere while doing this job as well.

The bus depot has water pumps for about $50 http://www.busdepot.com/ASP/heating_and_coolant.asp?PartType=H&VehCod=F&B1=S earch They sell the O-ring seperatly, but I beleive that there is one already in the kit.

Hope this helps. Just follow your Bentley (or a Haynes will do fine) and take you time.

And above all, Relax. Don't worry. Have a homebrew......
