It depends on conditions (outside temperature, payload, whether cruising or
climbing) but my syncro Westy registers between 190F and 250F. I don't let
it stay above 230F for any period of time--if necessary I will pull over and
let the engine cool off when the oil gets this hot.

Hey, just curious, but what oil temperature does our vanagon typical hit
when hot? (noticed that redline 20w50 and 15w50 are not recommended when
engine oil temperature is sustained under 225 degrees F....)
