Jim, I use a waxed based stuff after pressure washing the underside. I thin it out slightly with paint thinner to make it penatrate dried out undercoater, seams and surface rust. I put it on with a applier made for the purpose that has different wands and nozzels for inside panels and uses air pressure. The first step is to remove all loose rust and dirt. As far as not rustproofing yourself is concerned I don't have a answer to that other then to state that I'm not rusting yet! The product I use is RUSFRE and it comes in clear and black. I use the clear and it's just like the stuff VW uses. I purchase it at a paint and body supply store. If you can't find it, the address is 3B Products Co. 321 Greensburg Rd. New Kensington, PA 15068 It comes in one gallon jugs and it's around $20.
