Mainframe computer memory was, at one point in time, ferrite rings, called
'cores'. They had 2 [or 3,depending on the manufacturer] wires threaded
through them. One magnetized them one way, one the other way and the third
read the core status. since they were very small and the wires were, of
course, even smaller it was a nifty job to thread them BY HAND if I
understood the process correctly, and memory isn't faulty.
You can see why they cost a dollar a byte.
