Those are some good questions. The only portion I am pretty sure
of is: there is a return line to the gas tank coming from the fuel
pressure regulator. That is how the pump could keep running without the
lines bursting.
As to your problem; what have you done so far? When was the last
time you had a "tune up", i.e. filters, plugs, rotor&cap etc.?
