here in NZ they offer "free safety checks". those gullible enough to accept invariably get a list of repairs needed to their brakes. We had just had the rear brakes on our diesel Corona taxi done elsewhere and for some reason our driver took the car in there, maybe for an exhaust fix. Antway, they did their "safety check", pulled the (new) rear drums off and proceded to tell the driver the seals were leaking! Of course they weren't...

I have heard that this is typical.

Yep, pretty much the same where ever you go. If you happen to have their "Lifetime Warranty" the necessary repairs will involve everything but the guaranteed part!
